A group visit to the London Canal Museum has been arranged for Friday 26th April 2024.

It is the only London museum of inland waterways and two themes are in evidence at the Museum; firstly you will learn not only how the canals came to be built but you’ll also learn about the lives of the workers, the cargoes, its horses and how canals actually work. Secondly, it is also an industrial museum telling the story of the ice industry in London. This unique waterways museum is housed in a former ice warehouse built in about 1862-3 for Carlo Gatti, the famous ice cream maker and features the history of the ice trade and ice cream, as well as the canals.

We will meet up at 11am for a short introductory talk, after which we’ll be free to look around the Museum at leisure. When everyone has looked around sufficiently, Jon Jolliffe has kindly agreed to lead a walk along the canal bank up towards Camden Town where he will tell us some interesting facts about the local transport history and you’ll be surprised at how much of the past still survives, for example,  some of the stables which still exist within Camden Market and we will also be able to see some of the rails which are still in situ although no longer in use. It’s a not to be missed opportunity to see them and the walk itself is relatively easy.

The Museum is within easy walking distance of King's Cross St. Pancras and is well served by local public transport. It is fully accessible and although located on two floors, lifts are available to move between them.

The charge for this visit is £10 which includes tea & coffee and payment should be made to our The NTT treasurer as follows:-

BACS to National Transport Trust Sort code 40-52-40 Account number 00035669 using the reference "Canal and your surname"
Note cancellations can usually only be refunded up to 2 weeks prior to the visit.
