About the Transport Trust

Who We Are

Britain’s only charity dedicated to the preservation of all modes of transport and its infrastructure

Transport preservation in Britain has seen some notable successes: from the unique ‘Charabus’ of 1921 to a Bristol Scout aeroplane of First World War vintage, from the lowland canals of Scotland to the return of the Flying Scotsman, the preservation movement in Britain has much to be proud of.

But the risks remain to preserving all this heritage for future generations. If transport heritage seeks to be of value, we need to make sure people know about it. If those that have given so much to preservation have no one to pass their skills and enthusiasm on to, they will be lost.

For over half a century National Transport Trust - formed in 1965 as The Transport Trust - has campaigned for Britain’s immensely important transport heritage in all its forms, on land, in the air and on the water. Our role is to spotlight past successes, current activities and the future needs of transport preservation.

You can help us make a difference, whether as a member, a corporate member or by remembering National Transport Trust in your will.

Restoration Awards

We assist those projects of a high standard which are well advanced but which need a little extra help to cross the line.

Preservationist of the Year

Recognises the contribution made each year by an outstanding person in the field of Transport Preservation. It is matched by the award that we think is every bit as significant, the Young Preservationist of the Year.

Lifetime Achievement Award

The Trust acknowledges that exceptional achievements are built upon and sustained for the long term by the ongoing efforts of a vast army of supporters and volunteers. This award recognises such long term dedication.

Loans

We do give Loans to assist with short term cashflow on a project.

What We Do

Independent advice

We can provide coordinated advice on transport heritage matters to government and have done so in the past to organisations such as the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Red Wheel heritage plaque scheme

  • Promotes transport heritage right across the country, the transport equivalent of a blue plaque.
  • Each plaque describes the site and directs the reader to our website.
  • Its online presence informs, educates and enthuses people of all ages about our transport history, and thus helps to preserve it for the future.

In partnership with Corporate and Affiliate members we

  • Encourage the use and where appropriate accessibility to the public of preserved items.
  • Help specialist organisations to develop a priority system so that restoration funding and resources may be channelled towards the items of greatest significance and most at risk.
  • Stimulate the interest of young people in transport heritage so that we have preservationists for the future.
  • Increase protection for those items already in preservation, particularly those exposed to our climate.

Visits and Events We arrange a programme for members going far beyond what is available to the general public and including visits to some leading private transport collections.

Digest

Members receive our own high quality A4 quarterly magazine with news, information and comment on all aspects of transport preservation.

Membership of the Trust is open to private individuals and affiliated organisations that share our aims. To learn about the benefits of membership and how to join click here.
