Preservationist of the Year

Each year, the Transport Trust makes an award to recognise the Preservationist of the Year for an outstanding performance in the field of Transport Preservation.

The idea is to draw attention to the contributions made by people who frequently go unacknowledged for their achievements in a range of activities from project management, politics or administration to practical work in a workshop.

The 2007 Award

The Award is quite stunning - a silver trophy in the form of a specially commissioned model of the SS Great Britain is presented each year to the winner.

In 2007, HRH Prince Michael of Kent presented the trophy to Dr Robert Pleming in recognition of his leadership of the programme to restore an Avro Vulcan to flight status.

Vulcan XH558 will serve as a flying memorial to those who gave so much during the Falklands Conflict in 1982. Already described as the most challenging and complex restoration project ever undertaken, anywhere, you can read about Robert's herculean task here.
