Unique passenger carrying steam tug tender moves forward
Good progress is being made with the restoration of the 'Daniel Adamson', with the main engines stripped down, the main and bottom end bearings and thrust pads re-metalled and tenders underway for the re-grinding of the two crankshafts. Some of the new castings for the condensers have now been completed and the next phase is to have these machined and re-fitted.
The condensers will be re-built by the team to save a considerable sum in labour costs. Predictably, ever more remedial work is discovered during such a major re-build - not surprising with engines that are 104 years old! The commendable aim is to fully restore all of the mechanical items, rather than just 'patch them up'.
The image shows Chief Engineer John Deakin and volunteer Wally Graham testing the starboard steam/hydraulic reversing engine.
