Bill Hume - Lifetime Achievement Award, 2007
Bill Hume has been the Machine Registrar for the Vintage Motor Cycle Club for almost forty years. During this time, he has developed the Machine Register from a pilot study undertaken from a local base to a publication about to appear in its fourth edition, with in excess of 26,000 entries.
Bill’s professional skills as a Chartered Librarian and College Lecturer have given the movement a machine register for motorcycles, compiled in accordance with accepted academic conventions, that has become an invaluable tool for the enthusiast and historian.
It is a publication held in high regard by both DVLA and VOSA for its objectivity and comprehensive coverage of the historic motorcycle ‘parc’.
Bill Hume’s experience with The Register was of great value when the V.765 scheme was being prepared. The protocols, procedures and paperwork used in the compilation of The Register were incorporated into the DVLA’s systems.
To enhance the value and the importance of The Register, Bill has built up a network of Marque Specialists - enthusiasts whose in-depth knowledge of particular manufacturers’ products is utilised in the protocols of the dating procedure and can also be employed for the benefit of fellow-enthusiasts.
Bill remains at the centre of the VMCC system for the reclaiming of original registration marks through the V.765 scheme and for the issuing of ‘age-related marks’ for “rediscovered” motorcycles.
He was a member of the Club’s management committee for many years and was elected President of the club from 1984 to 1986.
