About Snaefell Mountain Tramway, IOM

Laxey Station, a tram-station in the village of Laxey on the Isle of Man, lies in the northern part of the village. As well as being the main intermediate station for the Manx Electric Railway, the station is also the southern (and bottom) terminus of the Snaefell Mountain Railway, and is therefore the island's only dual-gauge station. The coast line runs to a gauge of 3' 0" whilst the mountain railway has a gauge of 3' 6" to accommodate a central braking rail.

The tin-roofed station building dates from the early years of the line and features the station name in large lettering painted on its roof. This building houses a booking office and a caf© as well as the station toilets and was extensively refurbished in 1994 marking the centenary of the tram service to the village, though not of this site.

The Snaefell Mountain Railway is an electric mountain railway which joins the town of Laxey with the summit of Snaefell, at 2,036 feet (620.6 m) above sea level the highest point on the island. It connects with the Manx Electric Railway (MER) in Laxey. The line is five miles (8 km) long, built to 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) gauge and uses a Fell Incline Railway System centre rail for braking on the steep gradients. It is electrified using overhead wires at 550 volts direct current, with bow collectors.

The Manx Electric Railway is an electric inter-urban tramway connecting Douglas, Laxey and Ramsey in the Isle of Man. It connects with the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway at its southern terminus at Derby Castle at the northern end of the promenade in Douglas, and with the Snaefell Mountain Railway at Laxey. The railway's route is undulating and passes through areas of scenic beauty.

By Road: The station in Laxey is north of the centre off the A2 New Road
