Mark Walker - the 2011 Award Winner!

2011 Preservationist of the year Mark Walker 2The Preservationist of the Year award for 2011 goes to Mark Walker. The award is given to mark years of work in the restoration of a very special and unique car. Built 106 years ago by Darracq, the car was designed especially forsprint racing. It broke the record for the flying kilometre at 109 mph on its first outing, on a dirt road in Provence, and recorded a top speed of 122 mph in the USA.

There are long gaps in the car's history but it was known to have been offered to the Science Museum in 1954 for £50: the offer was declined. It then spent the next fifty years in private hands where it was brought into running condition.

2011 Preservationist of the year Mark Walker AwardMark Walker bought the car at auction in 2006 and has painstakingly resurrected engineering drawings from early photographs. Despite numerous setbacks the car is once again fulfilling its original purpose and setting hillclimb records.

A winner in the best traditions of Preservationist of the Year.
