Welcome

The Transport Trust is the only national charity established to promote and encourage the preservation and restoration of Britain's unique transport heritage in all its forms - by air, land (road and rail) and water (sea and inland).

Britain’s place in the history and development of transport is demonstrably second to none. It is an achievement of which the Trust, and the nation, are justifiably proud. This country's growth and prosperity has been inextricably linked with the movement of people and cargo. We take it as our mission to ensure the story of our heritage does not slip into oblivion.

Preserving and Restoring Historic Vehicles
The Transport Trust aims, for the benefit of the nation as a whole, to promote and encourage the permanent preservation of transport items of historical or technical interest

  • The Trust presents a range of Awards each year at a major ceremony to give recognition to the most outstanding contributions to the preservation of our transport heritage.
  • The Brighton Belle restoration is a Trust initiative in an under-represented area, namely electric train preservation.

Documenting and Recording our Heritage
The Trust also understands the importance of marking the impact that great engineers have had on the landscape and the permanent preservation of books, drawings, films, photographs and recordings of all forms of transport by road, rail, air and water.

  • Our Transport Heritage website provides a county-by-county directory to more than 500 sites of historic significance in the heritage of transport in the UK. If you have time on your hands, look up a site you don’t already know and explore!
  • The Red Wheel programme supplies explanatory markers for sites of significance - locations such as Roman roads, coaching inns, canal aqueducts or aerodrome buildings - including for the benefit of future generations sites where physical evidence no longer survives.
  • We maintain a unique and growing library of transport related books, photographs and ephemera
